Son of Cronus

Cronus was one of the Titans in Greek mythology and had many descendants--Zeus and Hades among them.  I decided to do a portrait of Hades, but I wanted to stay away from the traditional view of him as a shoddy-looking underground dweller (think Clash of the Titans movie) and display him in a more Olympian style (while keeping some of the symbolic elements of the character--specifically the helmet he always wore to make himself invisible).  I tried to make him look a bit more regal (hey--Hades was an Olympian after all) and since in the mythology it states that he also had ownership of earth metals and jewels, it seemed like he should be wearing something more than a drab black robe (so he's sporting some nicer attire).  I still want to keep him somewhat dark (and in the underworld).
